Betel UK is an independent Christian charity for men, women and families affected by drug and alcohol addiction and homelessness. The charity has helped countless people restore their broken lives through work, wellbeing and worship.

Betel UK needed a central point from which it could administer and serve its other centres around the UK and purchased the 4,500m2 industrial unit in Aston Birmingham to become its UK headquarters and community hub for the local neighbourhood.

The design extends and remodels an existing industrial building in central Birmingham. The multi-purpose community and office building includes a 1,000-seat auditorium, two performing arts black box theatre spaces with green rooms, meeting and seminar rooms, a café-restaurant with full commercial teaching kitchen, children’s soft-play area, a beauty salon, offices, break out rooms and creative spaces. It is a facility for the local community as well as a conference hub with national reach.

The existing building was substantially retained but completely clad to dramatically change its appearance on the street. New mezzanine floors and roof coverings to much of the building and complete re-insulation and entirely new electrical and mechanical installations make the building almost unrecognisable from its former life as a print distribution warehouse and before that, originally a timber mill.

The building is an amazing community and church facility venue and headquarters building for Betel UK. A remarkable project for a remarkable client.
