For many years, Swindon Evangelical Church have been looking for ways to accommodate their growing congregation. The long, narrow site of their current building has limited potential for development but after a long, unsuccessful search for alternative options in Swindon Old Town, the decision was made to release the potential of the existing church site on Devizes Road, Swindon.
The proposal is for the demolition of the existing single storey church building and the construction of a replacement two-storey church building.
Extensive design development took place in consultation with the planning authority Heritage Officer, resulting in a contemporary take on an Arts & Crafts façade design. Three ornamented brick arches have recessive surrounds to create depth and vertical glazing to enhance the connection between the street and the church.
Before a planning application was submitted, the church embraced the opportunity to purchase a site immediately adjacent to the church which has hugely expanded the potential for redevelopment and has placed the redevelopment of their existing site on hold whilst they decide how best to proceed.
